The Science of Water Quality

The Science of Water Quality

Understanding the invisible world beneath the surface

Clear water isn’t always clean water. Real aquarium health depends on the unseen balance of chemistry inside.

pH

Measures acidity/alkalinity. Keep stable within your species’ range.

Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate

The nitrogen cycle trio. Ammonia & nitrite should be 0; keep nitrate low.

GH / KH

Mineral hardness that buffers pH and supports biological stability.

Test weekly with a liquid kit to see what your eyes can’t. Consistency prevents most issues.

  • Change 15–20% of water weekly with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water.
  • Rinse filter media in tank water (not under the tap) to preserve bacteria.
  • Avoid overfeeding; excess food fuels algae and spikes nutrients.
Behind every crystal-clear aquarium is quiet chemistry at work — patience, observation, and care.
